Neil and Lorraine Ashmead acquired a derelict vineyard in the Barossa Valley 40 years ago and transformed it into what is today recognised as one of Australia’s premier estates. Today, the estate is run by the couple’s sons, Cameron and Allister, who continue in the pursuit of quality, with a vision for sustainable winemaking. Elderton was awarded 5 Red Stars in the Halliday Wine Companion – signifying the estate’s track record for excellence – and James Halliday has particularly praised the boutique winery for its “amazing varietal characters and regional definition”.   This is an outstanding interpretation of Barossa Shiraz. Elderton’s flagship wine, it is created with fruit sourced from a century-old, single vineyard on the Nuriootpa Estate. Bold, structured and elegant, it brims with vibrant red fruit and spicy oak, delivering the richly crafted tannins for which Command is so renowned. Vintage 2020 has earned 95pt from Robert Parker and 96pt from James Halliday, cheers!

Elderton Barossa Command Shiraz 2020

Smoky beef bouillon accents, brimming with umami, cloves, blue fruits and peat. Full-bodied, generously oaked and slick, considering the challenging hot year. The tannins are a bit smoky and not as refined as Command can offer, but a very good wine, bolshy and forceful and built for the cellar all the same. JS
