South Australia is the historic heart of Australian wine industry, and the home to some of the most famous regions, historic estates and the oldest vines in the country. It is responsible for around half of the country’s total output each year, producing a wide range of wine styles across different regions, from which the most signature is the powerful red wines made from the national pride – Shiraz.
Shiraz (called Syrah in France) is undoubtedly the king of Australian wines. It produces irresistible wines with concentrated flavours and profound complexity, most notably from Barossa, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. It is also blended with other varieties like Grenache and Mataro (Mourvèdre), creating layered wines that reveal another seductive side of the variety.
