For more than 30 years, Jayson Pahlmeyer has pursued his dream of creating a “Californian Mouton”, a wine to rival the great châteaux of Bordeaux. He crafts world-class wines of great power and finesse which, thanks to a meticulous barrel programme and an artful blending of each small lot, deliver great ageing potential. Robert Parker acclaims him as “one of California’s super-star producers,” creating wine “with a fabulous track record of ageing well”. Jayson by Pahlmeyer is the estate’s second label, made with the same attention to detail for which Pahlmeyer is known and trusted. This is a velvet-textured, expressive Merlot-dominant blend from some of Napa’s finest vineyards. The 2019 vintage was excellent, delivering layers of ripe fruit, and an outstanding structure.

Lovely, nascent complexity that’s also reflected on the medium-to full-bodied palate, which is tightly packed with all the goodies that the nose promised. Instantly attractive and ethereal nose with rich perfume and ripe red cherries and plums, as well as wild flowers and herbs. So beautiful and complex. The palate has such concentration and purity from start to finish. There’s an incredibly deep vein of ripe cherries here, framed in perfectly polished and layered tannins. Great Barolo. JS

It offers a lovely bouquet that explores some of the more nuanced sides of Nebbiolo that veer into the realms of rose, ash, tar and smoke. These pretty little details frame a solid core of berry fruit, cassis and dried cherry. One of the most distinctive aspects of this wine is the mouthfeel, which manages to impart its power and length without subtracting from its profound elegance. RP
