In recent years, “alternative” grapes are growing fast in Australia, where the production is dominated by the international varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The rise of these unfamiliar faces becomes an increasingly important topic for the country’s winemakers, with their augmented awareness on the concept of terroirs and climate changes, in an attempt to find the most suitable varieties for the next generation.
The Mediterranean climate of southeast Australia is ideally suited for Spanish and Italian varieties. Tempranillo and Nebbiolo, which produce some of the finest wines in the world, are the popular choices to be brought to the new continent. Despite the small planting volume now, the two varieties could be the future of the industry. On 28 Jan (Thu), we will feature some excellent examples and discuss the potential of these exciting additions to Australian wines.
