Massican
Massican from Napa Valley is like no other. Led by Larkmead’s former winemaker Dan Petroski, Massican is dedicated to make Mediterranean-inspired white wines with white Italian varieties, and has quickly become a favourite among restaurants and sommeliers all over the world for its deliciousness and food friendliness since 2009.
Massican Annia White Blend 2023
Made from Italian indigenous grape varieties Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano, blended with Chardonnay, the flagship wine Annia White Blend offers apple, citrus and floral aromas. Light-bodied, nicely tart and laden with stony, chalky elements and bitter lemon nuances, showcasing the uniquely fresh sensation of California wine.
Massican Carneros Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2023
Massican also source grapes from Hyde Vineyard, one of California’s most famous and historic Chardonnay vineyards. The parcel of Musque clone of Chardonnay that makes up this bottle was planted in 1992. The wine is fermented and aged in French Oak, then bottled as this single-vineyard wine.
This elegant wine extrudes aromas of citrus zest, honey, and spice. On palette, crunchy green apple, lemon cream, and sea salt are beautifully balanced.
Cobb Wines
In 1989, founders of Cobb Wines, David Cobb and his wife Diane, began cultivating pinot noir vines at Coastlands Vineyard in Sonoma County. Since then, Cobb Wines becomes one of the pioneers of quality Pinot Noir in the area, and has quickly made a name for themselves with its aromatic, elegant and complex Pinot Noir.
The family winery is now passed down to David’s son Ross, who built years of experience at reputable wineries such as Williams Selyem and Hirsch Vineyard. As a Burgundy wine enthusiast, Ross gathers both inspiration and technical acumen in Burgundy as well. Whole-cluster fermentation and a long cold soak period are frequently applied in his winemaking, resulted in wines that are more of a traditional Burgundy style.
Watson’s Wine has bought to you some of the most highly rated wines from Cobb Wines, all rated 95 points or above by Robert Parker.
Coastlands Vineyard
The Cobbs farm the 14-acre Coastlands Vineyard which was planted by David and Diane Cobb in 1989 and today contains some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the true Sonoma Coast.
The vineyard is located at an elevation of 900 to 1,200 feet on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The marine wind and fog at the site keep yields low (well under 2 tons per acre).
Wendling Vineyard
It is the most northwesterly vineyard in the Anderson Valley AVA and the closest proximity to the Pacific coast. Wine from Wendling has been consistently powerful, showcasing a boldness and intensity that rival the Diane Cobb block at Coastlands Vineyard. There is also an feral & herbal quality to the non-fruit aromatics that is inherently Anderson Valley.
2021 Pinot Noir
Reputable American wine critic Antonio Galloni of Vinous considered Ross Cobb’s 2021 Pinot Noirs are the best wines he has ever made. “From top to bottom, this is an absolutely stellar range. As always, Cobb crafts Pinots that exalt freshness and verve. The wines are done with a high percentage of stems, typically 40-50% for most of the wines. One of the most distinguishing stylistic choices here is a preference for longer time in barrel relative to most producers. Cobb’s wines have long been intriguing, but they have also shown some inconsistencies. The move to a new winery a few years ago was a turning point. The whites are very good too, perhaps a bit austere, but interesting, nonetheless. This year, though, the Pinots steal the show. I would be thrilled to own them.”
