Today, we would share some ideas with you about how to pair wines/spirits with movies of various genres! Let’s start now!
Romantic Movies
Romantic love and elegant wines are innately a perfect match. One of the classic representations of elegant wines is those from Margaux region of Bordeaux, France. To match with romantic movies, we may try Chateau Giscours Margaux 3eme Cru 2015. Located in the Margaux region, Chateau Giscours is also known as the “Winery of Mermaids” because of the signature mermaid logo on its wine label. Chateau Giscours Margaux 3eme Cru 2014 has silky tannin and prominent red fruit flavours that remind people of a mature lady; it can also age for up to 20 years, which resembles love, developing more flavours and complexity as time goes.
Action Movies
“Kung fu” fighting and explosion scenes are the most eye-catching elements in action movies. American winery Charles Smith has developed two signature wines “Kung Fu Girl” and “Boom Boom!” which exactly echo with these important elements.
“Kung Fu Girl” is a lovely Riesling with lime and apple on the nose, accented with floral aromas with a refreshing mouthfeel. It is named by the winemaker Charles Smith on a movie night while he was watching a Kung Fu movie. During the movie, all in a sudden he wanted to create a “killer white” to pair with Asian cuisine and as turns out it matches perfectly with Asian Kung Fu movies as well; “Boom Boom!” was first made in 2007 and it is an “explosive” Syrah with strong spices like its name. It soon became one of the most iconic wines in Washington after its launch and endorsed by wine lovers worldwide. Such an “explosive” wines, when paired with explosion scenes, would ignite extra excitement during the movie!
Comedy
For a comedy, nothing is more important than the fun and upbeat atmosphere it portraits. To pair with an upbeat, celebratory comedy, Champagne would definitely be the first choice.
No matter it is for ceremonies, ship launching, Formula One racing award presentation or other joyful occasions, Champagne is often the highlight of the event. Thus, to make your comedy night merrier, Champagne would be perfect.

Sci-Fi
Sci-fi may make your head spin but you would never have enough of it. They are full of complex plots and surprising twists; to pair with movies of the genre, we would recommend Orin Swift Abstract 2018.
From its wine label – a complex collage of 230 pictures – we could already have a glimpse of personality of Abstract. The wine itself is not simple as well. It is a blend of multiple grape varieties, including Grenache, Petite Sirah & Syrah. The winery sources the grapes from different vineyards and whittles them down over the course of a few months with marathon tastings until the best remains for the blend. All of these makes Abstract, like Sci-Fi, an absorbing complexity that makes you want more of it.
Horror movies
Sweating palms, ascending heart rate…in the face of the coming scares, we hate it but we love it. Horror movies always have this mesmerizing charm that turns countless painfully in love with it.
To enjoy horror movies, it is nice to pair with spirits to embolden yourself. Singleton Glen Ord 12 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky would be a good choice.
