No.5 – Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Le Volte 2015
Ornellaia is a world acclaimed winery located in Tuscany in Central Italy. Together with 3 other well-known wineries: Sassicaia, Solaia, Gaja, they’ve made up the top tier in the pyramid of Tuscany for producing top-notch Super Tuscans. Due to the regional classification system, Italian wines generally need to be made from local grapes in order to obtain high classifications. But then during the 60s, wineries in Tuscany began to explore the possibility in using non-local grapes for production, and found an amazing result, these wines were then born of Super Tuscan and promoted all over the world. Since then, Super Tuscan has become a household name in every corner.
As the entry wine for Ornellaia, Le Volte 2015 vintage is made of 67% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Sangiovese. The winemaker commented the 2015 as the “dream vintage for all winemakers”, where the weather was very balanced, with warm and sunny summers and a cool and dry harvest. No.2 – Tommasi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2015
First runner up Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2015 is a fav for many Hong-Kongers for its unique and rich style that is hard to be found in many other countries. Made from air-dried grapes which possess a concentrated sugar level after evaporation, these grapes were originally used to make only sweet wines. However, rumor has it there was once a winemaker forgot to stop the fermentation while producing some sweet wines, henceforth “accidentally” produced this dry red with high alcohol level but rich in palate, which later developed into this iconic Amarone.
Tommasi is a well-known Italian family in winemaking, with many wineries scattered from north to south in the country. Its Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is mainly blended with Corvina Veronese and Rondinella. The grapes are air-dried for 4 months before juicing, then aged in oak barrels for 30 months. The resulting wine is a deep garnet red with big and ripe aromas that flows with layers of full-bodied and complex flavours like cherries and plums. Although the price is slightly higher among our rankings, but it still manages to take the first runner in our ranking, this is a bottle that definitely worth a try!

And here comes the Champion Sacchetto Prosecco Brut NV! Prosecco is undoubtedly the most popular sparkling wine in Italy for its reasonable price and consistent quality, not to mention its refreshing style that attracts people with the luring floral and fruitiness. Many compare Prosecco to a Champagne, but indeed, this sparkling is produced with Glera under the Tank method which comes at a lower cost and less yeasty flavours like bread and toast from a Méthode Traditionelle Champagne, with a focus on displaying the fruitiness in it.
Established in 1900 in Veneto, Sacchetto produces a wide range of sparkling wines and dry wines. Its classic Prosecco Brut NV is a worldwide bestselling item, with fresh lemon, apple and mineral flavours. It has a delicate palate and acidity which just come right, allow it to be the best item as aperitif or goes with tapas like Salami and Parma Ham. The Prosecco in market are usually mono in taste and lack of complexity, but Sacchetto simply shares a different story with an affordable price without losing its own personality.
