    Prats & Symington

    Symington: Tradition and Innovation

Symington Family Estates is a Douro institution, producing premium port and innovative table wine. Named among The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands 2021 for the second consecutive year, tradition and dynamism have joined hands here across five generations.

Warre’s, part of the estate, is the original port house, a pioneering producer since 1670. These premium ports are a wonderful accompaniment to your mooncakes! At Prats & Symington, two great winemaking traditions come together, applying Bordeaux techniques to indigenous grapes traditionally vinified for port production. The result is terrific food wines which pair beautifully with a range of cuisines.

    The Extraordinary Family

The Symington Family Estates, family business currently being run by the 4th and the 5th generation, are the leading vineyard owners in the Douro Valley in Portugal in possession of 2,400 hectares of land with over 1,000 planted with vines. The estates are also often described as being a ‘Port empire’ from owning many port brands. Over 70% of Symington brands’ port wine is produced from grapes grown on their own properties.

Valuing respect, passion, excellence, stewardship and leadership, the Symingtons have the mission ‘to produce exceptional ports and wines that celebrate and preserve the uniqueness of Portugal’. Constantly improving, they brought in innovative vineyard management and vinification methods and hope to become a more sustainable wine company in the future while continuing carrying on the tradition started by Andrew James Symington in 1882.

The exciting Douro project of Bruno Prats, previously winemaker at Cos D’Estournel, and the Symington family, with its unparalleled experience in port production, has resulted in some exceptional wines. The first vintage of Post Scriptum was 2002, introduced as a partner – or second wine – of Chryseia. It is thus similar in style: rich and elegant with perfect balance. It is ready to enjoy at a younger age. Post Scriptum 2019 is lush and mouth-filling with pure, concentrated fruit, and mineral and spice undertones – all underscored by a fine bead of acidity. Do try this high-scoring, great value wine from two great names.
